Southern Lakes Fly Drive - New Zealand
Sweeping landscapes, rare wildlife, wild coastline and an overnight cruise through a region carved by glaciers over 100,000 years. You’ll see fur seals, albatross and the endangered yellow-eyed penguin plus immerse yourself in the midst of ancient rainforest clinging to soaring mountains and shimmering lakes crowned by granite peaks. Day 1 Christchurch On arrival at Christchurch airport you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel.Christchurch is a city which has undergone a huge regeneration yet retains its traditional, heritage feel. You can explore by double decker bus, vintage bicycle or wander the city on foot. Days 2-3 Dunedin (362 kms) Take the road south perhaps calling into the Steampunk HQ to see the eclectic exhibits of industrial steampunkin Oamaru. A stop at Koekohe Beach to see the Moeraki Boulders formed millions of years ago is also a must. Dunedin wears its Scottish heritage with pride and you’ll find an incredible line up of wildlife on its doorstep including the only place in the world where you can view Northern Royal Albatross in their natural habitat, from the mainland. Day 4 Catlins (161 kms) Following the Southern Scenic Route brings you to the Catlins Coastal Heritage Trail, a series of short walks and places of interest linked by easy drives. The Catlins are one of the South Island’s least discovered regions but you’ll find podocarp forest, cascading waterfalls, rugged coastlines and some truly vivid sunsets. Day 5 Te Anau (205 kms) Continue along the Southern Scenic Route to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park. Day 6 Doubtful Sound You’ll depart for your overnight Doubtful Sound cruise from Manapouri, just a short drive from Te Anau. After a short cruise across Lake Manapouri you’ll cross the Wilmott Pass by road to Deep Cove where you’ll join the Fiordland Navigator. Designed along the lines of a traditional scow, your vessel offers old world charm with spacious viewing decks, observation lounge and a fully licenced restaurant. This cruise takes in some of Fiordland’s most spectacular scenery and there’s opportunity to explore by kayak or tender. Accommodation is in private cabins with ensuite bathrooms. Days 7-9 Wanaka (226 kms) From Fiordland your journey takes you back into alpine country and the beautiful lakeside town of Wanaka. Gateway to the Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness area of glaciers and crystalline lakes Wanaka has a picture-perfect setting and is a great base from which to explore.
